Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Product Description
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is easily thermoformed and lends itself to remarkable reproduction of mould detail. Its glass transition temperature (ABS is amorphous and therefore has no true melting point) is approximately 105°C and may be turned, bored, drilled, milled, sawed, die-cut and routed with ease using high-speed and carbide-tipped tools.
ABS is easily machine-finished by filing, grinding, sanding, buffing and polishing. ABS has also good chemical and stress-cracking resistance to inorganic salt solutions, alkalis, mineral acids (except strong oxidizing acids) and animal oils.
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) Properties
- Strong toughness
- High stiffness
- High formability
- Easy to polish
- Good impact strength
- Excellent aesthetic qualities
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) FAQs
What is Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), and what are its key features?
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) is a versatile, amorphous thermoplastic known for its high toughness, stiffness, and excellent formability. It is widely used for applications requiring strong impact strength, good aesthetic qualities, and easy machinability.
What are the primary applications of ABS plastics?
ABS plastics are ideal for a wide range of applications, including automotive parts, consumer electronics, industrial components, and items requiring precise molding and finishing. Its ability to reproduce mold details makes it perfect for high-quality, detailed products.
What chemical resistances does ABS offer?
ABS provides good resistance to inorganic salt solutions, alkalis, mineral acids (except strong oxidizing acids), and animal oils. This makes it a reliable choice for environments with moderate chemical exposure.
How is ABS processed or machined?
ABS can be easily thermoformed, turned, bored, drilled, milled, sawed, die-cut, and routed using high-speed or carbide-tipped tools. It is also machine-finished through filing, grinding, sanding, buffing, and polishing for a refined appearance.
